Screwdrivers, Part 2: Removing Your Needle Plate and Feed Dogs


Up top is a Singer 201-2, a 206, a 15-91 and a 221 Featherweight. They all use the same feed dog screws and needleplate screws. You'll want to remove your needleplate and feed dogs pretty regularly to clean out all the lint that gathers underneath them. Now let's talk about how to easily get them off.

In the last post, I wrote about how the arm of the machine makes it impossible to get a screwdriver straight into the needle plate or feed dog screws. Even the stubbiest screwdriver just won't fit. That doesn't stop other people from trying (and failing), so inevitably you'll see these machines with partially stripped screws.

If there's any purchase left in the screw at all, here's two tools you can use to get those screws out. (If they're already too stripped, you'll have to take it to a pro.)



NOT my first choice

These offset screwdrivers are made by Tuff Stuff, which is not a tool company you hear people rave about, but I bought 'em because they were hollow-ground and the only thing my local hardware store had (just under $10, probably cheaper near you since NYC is expensive). I don't like these but I include this review because they're common and might be the only thing you can get locally, depending on where you live. I see these all the time in Mom-&-Pop hardware stores, they sell them both in a single pack.


Amazingly, the larger one is a good fit for a Singer needleplate screw, and the smaller one is a decent-enough fit for a feed dog screw. I was worried the steel on these tools would be soft and cheap, but surprisingly they got even stuck screws off without losing material or slipping.

When using offset screwdrivers, you don't just stick 'em in the slot and turn. You have to provide a lot of downward pressure on them, particularly if the screw is already partially stripped.


Press down very hard where the arrow is, as if you're trying to push the screwdriver right through the screw. You really have to drive it down into the slot, particularly if the screw has been overtightened, as I often find them.
Keep the shaft going straight into the screw.

Don't let it tip at an angle! Danger of stripping or slipping!
Warning: If you are clumsy, use your other hand to steady the screwdriver shaft near the screw. If you are not careful, you can cause the screwdriver to slip off and scratch the finish of your machine. If you have doubts, practice this on one of your beaters.

I only use this driver to break the screw loose, not undo the whole thing. Using offset screwdrivers under the sewing machine arm are a pain because you can only turn it a little, then you have to keep resetting it and turning it. So after breaking the screw loose, I use a properly-sized Brownell bit, which is so long that you can use the bit itself as a mini-screwdriver. (If you've never heard of Brownell bits, don't worry, I'll cover them in the next entry.)

Using the bit as a mini-screwdriver makes the job quicker.

Now, here's the tool I actually recommend:


This is a small ratcheting handle made by Chapman tools. They come in Chapman's screwdriver bit sets, but you can also buy them individually. The cheapest price I've seen for these is on Amazon, $4.25. Here's a link:



(Husky also makes one that I've seen at Home Depot for $6.99, but I've never used it.)


I like this ratchet better than the offset screwdriver because you just stick the bit you need in there, and you can pop the bit out, rotate it, and put it back in if the screw slot is at an inconvenient angle. If you don't know what I mean by this, it will become clear when you're actually trying to take the screw out.


As with the offset screwdriver, provide a lot of downward pressure along the shaft of the bit to keep it firmly seated in the screw. Once you've got that downward pressure going, you can start turning the handle to break the screw loose.



Again, after the screw's loose, you can get rid of the handle and just use the bit to unscrew it the rest of the way.

Looking at the bottom of the feed dog, you see why it's a good idea to regularly take it off and clean it. This lint gathered after I sewed just two pairs of boxer shorts; you can imagine how much would be under there if you're sewing, say, a quilt.



Here's a tip for when you put everything back together: I've found it's okay to tighten the needleplate screws just using the bit, which does not provide the same high amount of torque as if you tighten it with the ratchet or offset screwdriver. But the feed dog screws are a different story--those have to be tightened down using the ratchet or offset screwdriver. Every time I've tried tightening the feed dog screws using just the bit, when I start sewing, the vibration of the machine eventually causes those screws to start backing out by themselves and the feed dogs become dislodged. Obviously this will lead to trouble, so keep those feed dogs screwed on tight.

Getting Comfortable Wrenching on Your Machines: Screwdrivers, Part 1

Worth fixing.

I'd happily spend the weekend tearing a machine down, but that's not everyone's cup of tea. An experienced sewist friend told me "Most sewers don't care or want know anything about the mechanics [of the machine]. They just want to sew." I get that. But I still want to use this blog to illustrate some simple things you can do to keep your machine in top condition.

Experienced wrenchers may find my tutorials too dumbed-down. There's a reason for that. A lot of people tried their best to help me in the beginning, but because they were already experienced, they'd say things like "take your screwdriver," or "get a soldering gun and some solder;" they already knew in their head exactly what kind of screwdriver or tool, and they'd assume I did too. So I'd go to the store to buy a soldering gun and find out there's four different kinds, each of them different wattages. And five types of solder, "lead-free," "rosin core," "60/40," "63/37" and I wouldn't know what to buy. I'd guess anyway and usually buy the wrong thing.

When I'm learning something new I need everything spelled out for me, because I'm a little thick that way. So I'm going to write the exact kind of tutorials I wish I had read when I started out. I also hope to reach the greatest amount of people, including the tool-challenged and the clumsy, so I'll err on the side of overexplaining.

Before we can get to making some common adjustments and fixes for your machines, I'll need to talk tools a bit. I'll start with screwdrivers.

There are two types of screwdriver blades: Wedge-shaped and hollow-ground.

Wedge-shaped / no good

Hollow-ground / good
You want the hollow-ground. Those are the kinds of screwdrivers machinists use, because they fit perfectly in the slot of a machine screw, taking up all of the slot and providing even pressure when you try to turn the screw. The wedge-shaped screwdrivers--even the ones Singer included with their machines--will not fit the slots properly. If you use a wedge-shaped screwdriver, it will only press on the small part of the screw slot it's in contact with, and if the screw is tight there's a good chance you'll strip the screw.

A stripped screw is a real pain and you want to avoid it at all costs. It has to be drilled out to be removed, and then you need to buy a replacement screw. Since Singer used custom screws, you can't just run down to the hardware store to get another one; some companies make replica screws, but if you can't get one of those you'll need to get one off a parts machine. (See bottom of this entry for resources.)

Here's a faceplate screw on a 15-91. See how the slot is pretty square in cross-section?


When you put in the correct-size hollow-ground screwdriver, it fits perfectly and does not jiggle at all.


If you put a wedge-shaped screwdriver in, it does not fit properly. Look at all of the room left between the blade and the slot. This is a recipe for a stripped screw.


If I put in a thinner wedge-shaped screwdriver, it reaches the bottom of the slot okay, but there is still way too much space between the blade and the slot. Not good.



When you select a screwdriver bit, it must fit perfectly in the slot not only in the narrow dimension, but in the wide dimension. If it only fits well in one dimension, you can still strip the screw.

Another thing to watch out for is angles. Whenever you remove a screw, you always want the driver to be going straight into the screw, not off at an angle.

Something you will be doing a lot of, if you have a lot of machines and want to keep them running clean, is removing the needle plate and feed dogs. If you use a straight screwdriver to do this, you can see that the position of the machine's arm prevents you from getting the bit straight into the screw:



Zooming in, we can see that the bit is not seated properly in the screw. Not good.


Please do not try to remove screws from an angle like this, because if you're clumsy, as I can be, there's a good chance you'll strip it.

I'll show you a few different ways to get those tricky screws out in the next entry, and I'll also review several different brands of screwdrivers and bits, as well as cover where you can get them, and what you should or shouldn't buy depending on your needs.

There are two places I use myself:

Jenny from Sew-Classic sells replica screws (and more, which I'll cover later) that are commonly missing or damaged on old Singers: Needle plate screws, feed dogs screws, the presser foot knob-type screws, even the set screws that go into the hinges underneath the machine when it's in a case or cabinet. Since Singer's screws were custom I worried about replicas not fitting perfectly, but every type of screw I've ordered from Sew-Classic fit dead-on.

How to Restore Your Stitch Length Indicator Plate


Okay folks, today I'm going to show you how to get those pretty gold numbers back onto the stitch length indicator plate, so you can actually read the darn thing. Here's your typical "attic fresh" 15-91 that's seen better days:




The stitch length indicator plate's numbers have been worn away by time, making the numbers illegible.

Now I'm gonna show you how to fix that.

Go to an art supply store and pick up some gold paint. The smallest tube you can find, because it doesn't take much. Make sure you get acrylic paint--not oil, not watercolors, not pastels, nothing but acrylic. Acrylic won't bond to the metal plate, which is what we want, for it not to bond. You'll see why. Here's the brand of paint I bought.


I wasn't sure which type of brush to use, so I bought three different kinds: A pointy brush, a fluffier pointy brush, and a wider flat brush. Yes it was a waste of money buying all three, but I knew I'd print the results here, and tell you the right brush to use after testing them all out, so at least I saved you a few bucks.

I put the quarter in the picture both to demonstrate scale and my vast personal wealth.

Remove the SLI plate. It comes out with two screws, top and bottom, then unscrew the silver knob. You can take the screws and throw them in the carpet somewhere, or carefully place them in a jar for safekeeping. Guess which one I recommend.


Next, clean the surface of the plate. I used just a Q-tip and water because it was already decently clean. If it's covered in oil or grease, you'll need to clean it with a solvent like kerosene (or lighter fluid, which is the same thing but a bit easier to manage). Do not use rubbing alcohol, it will take the paint off.


Once the plate is clean and dry, we can get down to painting. The flat brush is the right one to use. You don't even need to squeeze the paint out, just dab the brush on the tube and save yourself a step.


If you're a klutz like me and you got too much paint on the brush, just wipe it off on something unimportant, like an envelope or your roommate's birth certificate.


Now we start slapping the paint on. Move quickly--we're not painting a Picasso here, just laying down a quick, thin layer of gold over the number depressions. I find it easier to do one side at a time.


Immediately after applying the gold, take a clean Q-tip and gently wipe it across the surface, back and forth, turning it often and working quickly. Do not press hard, but work fast. It's better to do 100 fast-and-light strokes than 20 strong-and-hard ones.


At first it will seem like the paint is not coming off, but within 30 seconds your strokes will begin to pick up the paint. The reason you don't want to press hard is because if you do, you'll dig the fresh paint right out of the number grooves. You just want to gently wipe the stuff off of the top and let the paint settle in the grooves underneath. Fast-and-light, fast-and-light, keep at it and don't press hard. Keep changing to clean Q-tips as they get loaded up with paint, otherwise you'll undo your own work.


While you're cleaning off your first coating of paint, it will look like crap, like in the photo below.  The numbers are only partially filled in and it looks terrible so far, but don't be discouraged.


It takes several coats for the paint to sink into the number grooves and fill them evenly, so after you've wiped off that first coat, apply another, and repeat the whole process.


After about four coats and a lot of wiping, it starts to look like this shot, below. The numbers are starting to pop, no?


By the time you're finished, you'll probably have built up a lot of paint on the inside edge of the slot, as seen here. Don't forget to Q-tip that off too.


Acrylic dries pretty quick, so you can put the plate back on your machine just about immediately. Here's a before-and-after shot:


Not too shabby, huh? And now you can actually read the numbers without having to stick your face right up on the machine.

Building Out the Workspace

I love tools, and there was only one thing that could make me rip out the six-foot double-door tool cabinet I'd built some years ago: I needed more space to work on the Singers. After a while, tearing down 15-91s on your desk or kitchen table just doesn't cut it anymore. So I compressed my tools into denser storage and got to work.

  I salvaged some 2x3s left over in the photo studio from a shoot and ordered a couple more from a local lumberyard. Did some quick calculations and hit 'em with the chopsaw. Ripped a sheet of 3/4" birch plywood and rounded off the edges with a router. Nothing fancy, no trim necessary.

  Also routed a little half-circle in the back consistent with an electrical conduit running up the wall of my place. Plywood's eight feet long but I had nine feet of space, so I cut an extra piece, seen here at right. Then I polyurethaned the surfaces and edges, three quick coats with sanding in between.

  I scored six black Steelcase file cabinets for free off of Freecycle. Placed 'em side-by-side with space in the middle for my legs. The toughest part was shimming and leveling them all, the floors in my place are six kinds of crooked.

Then I laid the simple 2x3 lattice on top, screwing it into the cabinets from the bottom.

Dropped the plywood sheets on top of that with a couple of pocket screws to keep it in place.Next I just needed to populate it with machines.

That last part wasn't a problem.

Why Vintage Singers?


My mission is to reinvigorate interest in old Singer sewing machines, and help those already using them. In this age of plastic junk, it's incredibly satisfying to use an all-metal machine that was made over 50 years ago and still runs like it was brand new. A well-cared-for or well-restored Singer will run forever and do its job with excellence. If you've ever seen the beautiful straight stitch laid down by a well-tuned Singer then you know what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, you will after I populate this blog with enough entries.


Singer would take twenty- or thirty-pound chunks of cast iron and precision-machine them into refined, powerful and versatile tools. They dominated the global sewing machine market from roughly the late 1800s to the 1950s. They made the best stuff, designed by the best engineers, manufactured using the best techniques with the best materials. That's why the machines are still around. I have an expensive fancy-schmancy cell phone that is state-of-the-art, and chances are I won't have it in two years; it will break or become obsolete. Similarly, the computer you're reading this on is not something you'll give to your grandchildren. But I've fixed up thrift-store Singers that I know will still be sewing after I'm dead.


The machines I've fixed will last not because I'm some kinda super-mechanic, but because they are designed incredibly intelligently and built with durable materials. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to perform the basic operations necessary to get them running, so I hope you will not be too intimidated to try them. The basic mechanical principles they operate on were worked out in the 1800s. With just a little effort you can turn a frozen-up boat-anchor Singer into a lifelong machine, and I want to help you do that by sharing what I learn as I go along.

Sewing Again!!

My little featherweight that I recently purchased from a local, has been through the ringer.
  • I oiled and lubed the featherweight.  It was bone dry!
  • I reconfigured the tension assembly, after acquiring an "e" washer.  Still didn't tension correctly, so mom brought down a new tension assembly.
  • Mom tried to "time" the featherweight, look at the needle hook assembly, but she did all that she could do.
  • I took the featherweight to a local sewing machine repair place.  On the first try, after adjusting the "timing", the "timing" slipped.
  • I then addressed these issues on Graham's Featherweight Yahoo group, and Graham had some suggestions, as well did other members of the forum, one being, take another featherweight to the sewing machine repair person, so that they could compare a working featherweight, with my little machine.
  • Took my "zippy" featherweight (looks bad, works great) and that is what Carmen did, she fixed it!  The gear underneath that you use to time the machine had to be loosened, and everything else tightened, along with a location of a screw, repositioned.  Wow, the stitch on this machine looks great.
